Kahle, this was a wonderful way to include your daughter into readiness skills like pre-writing and pre-math. The dough would strengthen her hand muscles, and the concrete visual of the measuring will help her understand how the term 1/2 cup can be visualized. So much of the early childhood years consists of providing opportunities to put "labels or terms" with concrete items. When your daughter enters school, she will have a vast vocabulary that she has learned and will be able to draw from for use in the classroom. Plus... the smell of the cinnamon rolls baking in the oven and the eating of them will add to the memory building. What great memories you are building with your young daughter...

What a wonderful way to introduce her to the world of books... Kahle, you have done an excellent job creating a book that is about her and the things she enjoys doing. Not only will that help her to "pretend to read the page" but it will freeze in time who she is right now and the things she enjoys. Ironically, we think we wont forget those things, but we do. You will enjoy reading this back and reminence over these wonderful young years.

One of my daughters favorite books now is the book about her, it is awesome to hear her read it. Kaihtlyn likes icecream, Kaihtlyn likes the color pink. We put pictures or things on cardstock punched holes in it and tied it with yarn. The book is all about her and what she likes. This would be fun to do every year or two to see how much they change.

You can give you child a die and let them roll it and count the dots. Give them a sheet with numbers written on it or from Mary's patterns take the number sheet and have them trace the number of dots they rolled on the dice.

An actvity that Mary had mentioned in our course was the alpha lacing and it has been great, I take the letter cut it out of cardstock or use foam board and punch holes in it then take a piece of yarn and have child lace the letters, my three year old loves this activity. You could also lace shapes.

For letter recognition I made some flashcards out of cardstock and i drew and colored the same letter twice and then I used those for a matching game, she flips them over so that she can not see them and we play it like a game of memory.

One game we have played is alphabet bingo to help with letter recognition. I made my own bingo cards and call cards out of cardstock. I place the call cards in a brown paper bag and pull one out show it to my 3 yr old and say the name of the letter.

One last activity I will mention that we did recently is with a half piece of cardstock i divided it in half again and so on one forth of it i wrote a number and then on the other half I had my 3 yr old place that many stickers, this helps with number recognition and eventually i will cut them in half and she can use them as a matching game once she is more familiar with the written number.

To practice one to one ratio and color sorting we bought some pompoms and a silicone muffin tin and placed a single colored sticker in each muffin so that Kaihtlyn could place the pompoms into the muffin tin by their color. To work on fine motor skills i bought some bamboo tongs and she used those to pick up the pompoms. The smaller the pom pom was the harder it was for her to pick it up. This was a great activity for her to do one her own and she enjoyed it.

Along with the post above about building patterns with blocks you could also draw these out onto paper and color the different squares and have the child place a block where they belong on the paper, simple activity that would not take much time.
