OK, Moms, there are lots of beautiful leaves outside… what are some activities you have tried with your child using the colorful Fall leaves? Picking them, sorting them, examining them, put paper over the back side of the leaf and color back and forth for a leaf rubbing… what have you tried? Please share the age of your child as well and what state you are writing from. (Leaves are changing at different stages the farther North we go on the map… )–Mary, Topeka

I remember one fall day on our way running errands. My son, aged 5, and I saw a beautiful tree filled with bright orange leaves that was in a bank parking lot. Much to his thrill, I turned the car around, parked it, and we got out to take a closer look. We gleefully kicked through the fallen leaves and enjoyed the pungent “fall smell.” Then we scoured around for ”the perfect orange leaf” to take home with us. It was proudly displayed on the frig for dad to see that night. It just took a few minutes of time, out of the busy day, but those are the kinds of memories I cherish now.

I just love the red leaves this time of year. So one day I pointed out how beautiful they are to my older two, ages 3 and 2. Now, everytime we're in the car, my oldest always points out the pretty red leaves and comments on how beautiful they are.
Also, one of the warmer fall days we've had, I took the kids outside to gather, jump in and just play in all of the leaves in our yard. My 3 yr old wanted to collect some of the leaves and so I let her. When we got them inside, I decided it'd be neat to make a turkey using these leaves. We used about 10 leaves to create the “feathers” for the turkey. We drew the body and eyes, beak and other parts. We then took it a step further and sponge painted pretty fall colors on the white part of the paper that surrounded the turkey. When we placed clear contact paper on both sides of the paper. Now we have a wonderful fall placemat.

That was a great example of starting with a simple activity and running with it!!! It all started with pointing out some beautiful leaves that God has created for us to enjoy. Your children seemed so drawn in on what you were teaching them. Those kinds of special days will be played and replayed in their memory banks in years to come. What a great day you have provided for your little ones. Way to go mom!!! : )

After taking Mary's class last year I realized that there are so many things you can teach your child just by using or doing every day things! I now have a child in kindergarten and everyday my 2 year old and I walk her to school. We've often used this as a nature walk. We talk about the trees and the nuts and the squirrels who collect them. We have also picked up different colored leaves for my youngest to try to sort by color and even tried some leaf rubbings. It's such a great activity and such an easy thing to add in to your day that you might already be doing anyways, so why not turn it into a teachable moment!
Just recently I've discovered a way to make a little nature fairy for my girls. We take a stick and hot glue it on cardboard for the body and then put on some tiny sticks as arms and legs, then we glue on some leaves as wings and for a long dress we use longer leaves and then just draw on a head. We've even found some fuzzy grass that made for some fun hair also. It's a silly little project buy my girls just loved it! Once again just a fun activity using supplies that nature gave us and is most fun in the Fall with all the different colored leaves- we have quite a wardrobe of dresses for our fairies now and we take the chance to talk about why the leaves change colors and when it happens, so we talk about the seasons also. It's a great activity for so many different school subjects!
Mary's class is wonderful any time of year, but I especially like to do some of her Fall activites!
